The method, in one formula

first-pass usable rate = shots accepted on attempt 1 ÷ shots recorded
cost per accepted shot = total spend ÷ shots accepted
  • Freeze acceptance first. The rule must be written before generating (subject, motion, camera, continuity, artifact tolerance, duration, resolution, format, rights). Measuring against a moving bar makes runs incomparable.
  • Zero denominator means undefined, not free. Until one second passes acceptance, cost per usable second does not exist — showing $0 there would hide exactly the waste this method exposes.
  • The number is yours, not a leaderboard. Different tasks, inputs and acceptance rules produce different figures per model, so this page ranks nothing. Two teams can honestly measure opposite winners.

A worked example (hypothetical)

Plan A spends $6 across all attempts and ends with 12 accepted seconds: $0.50 per usable second. Plan B spends $8 but ends with 24 accepted seconds: $0.33 per usable second — the pricier plan is the cheaper producer. These are illustrative numbers, not measurements of any real model; the only trustworthy figure is the one you measure on your own task with a frozen acceptance rule.

How to lower the number without lowering the bar

Match the model to the task. The cheapest model per run is often the most expensive per usable second on a task it is weak at. Browse the model catalog by capability rather than sticker price.

Test risk small, commit late. Prove the risky element — motion, continuity, a product's label — with short cheap runs (for example a Seedance draft) before running the expensive final configuration.

Set a stop budget per shot. Decide before generating how much a shot may consume before you change model, change input, or cut the shot. Unbounded retrying is how cheap tools produce expensive projects.

Re-use what passed. A configuration that produced an accepted result is an asset. On this site every generation is saved as a Creation you can re-run and branch, so the second usable second is cheaper than the first.

What is cost per accepted usable second?

It is your total generation and retry spend divided by the number of output seconds that passed an acceptance rule you wrote down before generating. Formula: (generation + retry spend) ÷ accepted usable seconds. It differs from advertised per-clip prices because it counts every failed take, and it is undefined — not zero — until at least one second passes acceptance.

How do you calculate the real cost of AI video after retries?

Record every attempt for each shot: what you were charged (including failed takes), whether the result passed your pre-agreed acceptance rule, and how many usable seconds it produced. Then divide total spend by total accepted seconds. Only seconds that passed the rule you froze before generating go into the denominator; shortening the goal afterwards to make the number look better invalidates the comparison.

Why are AI video credits not directly comparable across platforms?

A credit is a platform-internal unit: each platform prices models, resolutions and durations differently in its own credits, so 100 credits on one service is not 100 on another. The comparable figure is cash spent per accepted usable second of output for your specific task, which is what this worksheet measures.

What counts as an accepted usable second?

A second of output that passes the acceptance rule you defined before generating — typically covering subject or product fidelity, motion, camera behaviour, continuity, artifact tolerance, duration, resolution, aspect ratio, format, and independently verified commercial-rights status. Passing is defined by your written rule, not by whether the clip "looks good".

How can you reduce AI video generation cost without lowering quality?

Four levers, in order: pick a model matched to the task rather than the cheapest sticker price; test risky elements with small cheap runs before committing to the expensive final take; set a stop budget per shot before you start; and re-use configurations that already passed acceptance instead of re-discovering them. Lowering the acceptance bar is not a cost reduction — it moves the cost into rework.

What should you record in a 10-shot AI video test?

For each shot: the model and settings used, whether it passed the frozen acceptance rule, whether it passed on the first attempt, total attempts, accepted usable seconds, everything you were actually charged including failures, time to the first accepted result, and the main failure reason (subject mismatch, motion/camera, continuity, artifact, format, rights). How much does one AI video cost?

There is no single figure, because the cost of a generation is the model multiplied by the settings you choose. Why do comparison tables of "price per AI video" disagree with each other?

Because each table quietly fixes one configuration and compares that. Change the resolution, the duration, or whether audio is on, and the ranking between tools reorders. A price per video is only meaningful next to the configuration it assumes, which is why every row in the snapshot table on this page states its configuration.

Do failed generations still cost credits on AIVG?

No. When a job reaches a failed state on this site the credits charged for it are returned to your balance automatically. On platforms where failures are not refunded, those charges belong in the spend column of the worksheet above — they are part of your real cost.

What is the cheapest way to test a prompt?

Run the idea at the lowest viable setting first — shorter, lower resolution, no audio — and only re-run the take that worked at the quality you actually need. Most of your discarded attempts should be the cheap ones. Then track the test in the worksheet so you know your real cost per usable second, not just the per-run price.

Are the credit figures on this page fixed?

No. They are a snapshot taken on 2026-09-08 using the same calculation the workbench performs, and providers change their rates. Treat the table as a planning aid and the figure shown in the workbench before you generate as authoritative.
